The Cozy Sweet Breakfast That Somehow Becomes a Habit
Nobody is laughing. Recipes like this become repeat favorites for a reason. This baked custard toast is soft in the middle, golden on top, slightly crisp at the edges, and ridiculously easy to make.
It feels like a mix between French toast, bread pudding, and dessert-for-breakfast energy. And honestly, that is a very strong combination.

Ingredients
- 6 thick slices of brioche, challah, or sandwich bread
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
How to Make Baked Custard Toast
Prepare the oven and dish
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease a baking dish lightly with butter or oil.
Arrange the bread slices snugly in the dish.
Make the custard
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, melted butter, and cinnamon if using.
Whisk until smooth.
Pour and soak
Pour the custard evenly over the bread.
Let it sit for about 10 minutes so the bread absorbs some of the mixture.
That little soaking step is where the magic starts.
Bake
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and the custard is set.
The edges should look caramelized and the middle should feel soft but not wet.
Serve
Serve warm.
It is great plain, or with powdered sugar, honey, syrup, or a little fruit on top.
Helpful Tips
Use slightly stale bread for the best texture.
Brioche makes it richer, but regular bread works too.
Do not skip the resting time before baking.
