Bioplastic Suncatchers

We stirred, poured, and watched the sunlight dance through our homemade suncatchers—each one a tiny masterpiece made with love and color.

Bioplastic Suncatchers

(Makes 2–3 medium suncatchers)

Supplies:

½ cup water

2 tbsp cornstarch

1 tbsp white vinegar

1 tbsp unflavored gelatin

Natural or food-safe coloring (e.g. beet juice, turmeric, spirulina, or food coloring)

Optional: fine glitter, flower petals, or tissue paper for decoration

Non-stick surface (plastic sheet, silicone mat, or parchment paper)

String or suction hook for hanging

Hole punch

Instructions:

Prepare the Bioplastic Base

In a saucepan, mix together the water, cornstarch, vinegar, and gelatin. Stir well until there are no lumps.

Heat the Mixture

Warm over medium-low heat, stirring constantly for 3–5 minutes. It will turn thick and gooey. Remove from heat.

Add Color & Decorate

Divide the gel into bowls and stir in natural colorants. Pour onto your non-stick surface in thin layers. Swirl with toothpicks, press in petals, or sprinkle glitter for a unique look.

Dry Completely

Let dry at room temperature for 24–48 hours. Flip halfway through drying to ensure even results.

Hang Your Art

Once firm and flexible, punch a hole at the top and add string. Hang it in a sunny window and enjoy your handmade eco-art.
